foligno

Foligno is situated on the plain rather than on a hilltop, but had an important role as a crossroads, during the umbrian, roman, and medieval periods. unfortunately, its location has also meant that it has grown rapidly in the 20th century, and sadly, its medieval walls were demolished at the beginning of the century to ease congestion.

the cathedral at foligno, dating from the 13th century, used alternating bands of pink and white marble in its facade.

adjacent to the cathedral is the medieval palazzo dei canoniche, a urban monastery.

foligno's most famous inhabitant was st. angela of foligno, a 13th-century saint and mystic, who had visions of the baby jesus, including one in which she helped mary to give him a bath. angela is also supposed to have eaten nothing but the eucharistic bread for 12 years.
